DOCTOR REPORTS 22,000 PEOPLE COULD HAVE BEEN SAVED HAD FDA ACTED MORE QUICKLY TO REMOVE TRASYLOL FROM MARKET

February 15, 2008—Dennis Mangano, Ph.D., M.D. says 22,000 lives could have been saved had Trasylol been removed from the market when he first published a study linking the drug to kidney failure and widespread death.

Dr. Mangano alleged that Bayer failed to disclose to the FDA at an advisory panel meeting in September 2006 that the drugmaker had conducted its own research which confirmed the conclusions from his January 2006 study.

Study Reports ELevated Risk of Kidney Failure in Patients Receiving Trasylol During Open Heart Surgery

January 26, 2006—A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found Trasylol is associated with a substantially greater risk of kidney failure and other serious side effects.

Trasylol is used in as many as one-third of all open heart surgical procedures to control the risk of bleeding in patients. The study, conducted by Dennis Mangano, Ph.D., M.D., concluded that substituting one of two safe, generic drugs would prevent as many as 11,050 dialysis complications per year.
